Simulations and Modeling Websites

Computer simulations and modeling can help us learn, predict, test theories, and collect data.

Computer technology lets us represent systems (such as biological systems, the circulatory systems, digestive systems, ecological systems) by making models to help us understand the system.

Simulations let us manipulate the model.  For examples, we can manipulate time in a simulation instead of waiting for many years to pass to see what would happen. Computer technology also lets us simulate a real situation without having to harm living plants or animals or systems.

Sunny Meadows

In every ecosystem there is a food chain. In the food chain, species can be consumers (who eat other species), or producers (who are eaten by other species) or both. In this game, there is a simple food chain of foxes, rabbits and plants. You set up a food chain of plants, rabbits and foxes within an ecosystem, by using the [+] and [-] controls to set up the initial populations. Then you click 'Start Game', and the game will simulate 50 years of the changes in populations within an ecosystem. The aim is to set up the populations to be as stable as possible . Very unstable populations can result in the extinction of a species, so be careful! If the populations survive after 50 years, you'll get a score out of 100.

KidWings Virtual Owl Pellet Dissection

In this simulation, you will be dissecting an owl pellet filled with animal bones. Pellets are the remains that are not digested such as feathers and bones and are then regurgitated. Discover what the owl ate.  See if you can find all the bones and place them correctly on the drawing.

Dissect a Flower

Learn about the parts of a flower by dissecting this virtual flower.
Picture

Dissect an Eye

Learn about eye anatomy in this eye model.  Dissect the eye to learn the different parts.
Picture

Dissect a Salmon

Learning projects developed by students for students.  Dissect a female salmon and learn about the anatomy of a fish.

Dissect a Virtual Frog

Learn about the anatomy of a frog.  This website presents a realistic approach to dissection of a frog. May be a bit graphic for smaller children and queasy adults.
